French Drain System

Keep Water Away With Our Trusted Drainage Solutions

Drainage Problems Don’t Stand a Chance

Interior French drains are typically used to address basement water problems where high levels of ground water from underground springs, rivers or a fluctuating water table, due to excessive precipitation, can cause moisture to penetrate and seep through your home’s foundation.  Water that accumulates around your basement walls and floor can damage the structural integrity of your home.  It can also contribute to the development of mold and mildew.  All of which can dramatically reduce the value of your home as well as cause various health problems.

French drains alleviate the hydrostatic pressure on your basement walls and floor around your foundation’s perimeter, and redirects ground water to a sump pump, where it is safely pumped out and away from your house or to a dry well.

French Drains Can Address Your Hydrostatic Water Pressure Problem

Installing a French drain requires cutting a trench into your basement floor around the parameter of your basement, typically 12” to 18” out from along the foundation.  The trench is then excavated about 12” down to the bottom of you basement wall’s footing.  A perforated pipe is laid along the perimeter of your basement in the trench where it empties into one or more collection tanks laid beneath your basement floor. Thereafter, a sump pump carries the water out and way from your house as previously mentioned.  Once the perforated pipe has been installed, gravel is used to fill the trench.  This prevents the perforated pipe from getting clogged with dirt and allows for the easy drainage of water.  The trench is then closed by a coating of concrete to match the rest of your basement floor.

FAQ

About French Drains

Most inside French drain systems are excavated down to your foundation’s footings, which is typically about 12 inched deep.

Yes, gravel is very important here. It helps with water flow and prevents the French drain from getting clogged by soil over time. We use a proper gravel base and surround the pipe to keep everything working smoothly.

For most residential French drain systems, a 4-inch perforated pipe offers the best flow and performance. That’s the usual go-to for handling moderate to heavy drainage needs around homes.

A professionally installed French drain system can last 30 to 40 years or more. We use durable materials and expert techniques to make sure your system stands the test of time.

Yes, a properly installed French drain can significantly reduce or prevent basement flooding, especially in areas with poor surface drainage or high water tables like parts of Suffolk County. By redirecting groundwater away from your foundation, it helps relieve hydrostatic pressure and keeps your basement dry during heavy rains.

An interior French drain is installed along the inside perimeter of your basement to collect water that seeps through walls or floors, often connected to a sump pump. An exterior French drain is placed outside the foundation to intercept water before it reaches your home, making it ideal for properties with consistent surface runoff.

Signs that your property might benefit from a French drain include standing water in your yard, a damp basement, or visible signs of water damage along your foundation. If water pools near your home after rainstorms or you’ve had recurring basement moisture, it’s worth having the drainage evaluated.

Yes, while French drains are low maintenance, they can clog over time with dirt, roots, or debris, especially in areas with clay soil or heavy tree coverage. Periodic inspections and cleaning help ensure the system stays functional and avoids water buildup near your home.

DIY installation is possible, but for most homeowners, especially in areas with tricky grading, permits, or tight access, hiring a professional is the safer option. Proper slope, placement, and pipe installation are critical for long-term performance, and mistakes can lead to poor drainage or property damage. At Diamond Masonry and Waterproofing we have the expertise to make the whole process hassle-free.
